There are few places in the world that could make paper fans happier than Shepherds in Victoria. Their shop is a shrine to the book arts, and is full to the brim with tools, trinkets and papery goodness.
Shepherds started as a hand bookbinding company in 1998, and their love of the craft is clear in every part of the shop. Alongside the reams of beautiful handmade papers covering the walls and fine leathers rolled on shelves there are also lots of classes, covering everything from restoring old books to linocutting.
The staff are incredibly knowledgeable and very willing to share that knowledge; when we visited the manager Matt was giving advice to someone who was looking to create her own range of notebooks for an art project. However if you’re just in the market for some lovely stationery they have plenty of products covered in their beautiful paper.
If you’re spending your hard earned pennies in the shop you can rest assured that only are you supporting traditional English craft, but your money is also going to another good cause. Shepherds run a social enterprise charity out of a Wiltshire barn, training veterans in bookbinding to help with rehabilitation and employment. What a great excuse to go and buy a whole haul of lovely things!
