Tucked away along a quiet residential street in East Dulwich is a beautiful small Independent book shop called Rye Books.
The shop sells a stunning selection of hard-to-find graphic novels, and a wide selection of books covering subjects such Art & Design, Travel, Food & Drink, History and Foreign Language books. At the back is a small stationary and gift section with a beautiful selection of cards created by local artists and designers. Occasionally this little shop puts on small events such as book signings and film screenings, which apparently fill the shop to the brim with customers.
Amongst all the wonderful books they sell there, there was one graphic novel that particularly stood out – ‘Issun Boshi’, illustrated by Mayumi Otero and Raphael Urwiller. This gorgeous graphic novel tells a classic Japense fairy tale in a striking and colourful screen printed format, with every page so well designed that they could easily be sold as individual prints.
This independent shop offers such a tasteful selection of books, cards and stationary, leaving you spoilt for choice with things to buy. What’s really great about this little shop is that it also helps other independent artists and designers by stocking their products too. Its really great to know that these kind of shops can still survive and stock such a wonderful array of products which, you can tell, the owners feel passionately about. If you get a chance to visit Rye Books you won’t be disappointed!
